| What is GPS and how does GPS work? Knowing how GPS works will give you an appreciation for the fantastic technology behind the GPS system. GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System, which is a system using satellites to give the user their position on the earth. There are 24 of these satellites, which measure the radio signal’s time to and from the satellite. By triangulating these signals the user of GPS can see accurately where they are on the earth’s surface. The self contained GPS units read the radio signals from the satellite and compute the position based upon the triangulation of the signals. Depending on the sophistication of the GPS device this position can be measured down to a few meters to a few centimeters. This accuracy is maintained by knowing at all times the location of the 24 satellites. There is a second major component to the signals and that is making corrections to the radio signal to improve its accuracy. These corrections may be needed due to delays the signal encounters in the atmosphere. |
